I was actually just researching focus breathing on the rokinon vs sigma the other day and was wondering why nobody talks about it. Thanks for another video Justin!

I don't think you're crazy Justin. Before I was indoctrinated to think focus breathing is objectively negative, I really liked the look. And I feel like in the worlds of photography and videography there's become so many rules that are actually very subjective. "Round bokeh is better". "Sharper is always better". "Focus breathing is always bad". "Shallow depth of field is always better." "Shallow depth of field is for amateurs." There are some cinematography rules that should generally be followed, but honestly, I think there's a lot of online groupthink about certain things that we as artists would be better to break away from.

Appreciate the videos you put out and giving your honest thoughts on thinks that stretch or break the group think mentality. And very interesting comparison of the Rokinon and Sigma lenses.

Looks like sigma behaves almost like a lumix lens. I have same experience with manual focus pulling those. Quick throw, huge jump, while slow takes foreveeeeer to get there.
Looks like proper cine lenses are it. Thanks for the demo again.

I own both, and I totally agree man! Was using the Rokinons for a while before purchasing the Sigma, and actually found it quite awkward, and yes, very precious with focus … it felt backward to me!
Still an awesome piece of kit!
Maybe too fiddly for me?
Anyhoo – picked up a vintage Angenieux 12-120mm f2.2 (parfocal) … so I expect to find some new challenges there!

the sigma is for the aps-c size sensors, that is why the Rokinon is more punched in

Focus pulling on the Roki is distracting because of how much it zooms but the short focus throw on the Sigma is tough, though. The compromises of a budget filmmaker. Have you considered the Meike M43 cinema lenses?

I've been photographing only with old vintage Minolta Rokkor, Zuiko and Helios lenses for many years and when I switched to videography and purchased the Sigma 18-35mm (+50mm)… After all the hype and buzz about the lens.. I hated it so much that I've been wanting to sell them for almost a year now. The focus throw is horrible, plain garbage on the lens and not being a parafocal makes me crazy!! I understand that you can try to fix this issue with rotating the glass in a metabones or viltrox (which I have), but when I want to use the 50mm, I need to readjust it, or the lenses with the sigma adapter, either way, a hassle!! The only reason why I like it, is the neutrality of colors and the ridiculous sharpness it has for both photos and video. Now I've been thinking of getting those Meike Cine lenses because they are expanding their line-up. Yes, I know they aren't perfect and yes I know you should by full-frame lenses so you don't have to change them when the body does. If and when I'm getting rid of my Sigma lenses, any thoughts on Meike Cine vs the Rokinon Cine lenses? Also, call me crazy, but I too prefer some small breathing on a lens 😎

Justin try the Meike lens they are cheap and come out as cine lenses.a Much better lens than the Rokinon. Availability as of now is the 16 and 25. 12 is coming in August and the full set sometime this year including a 50mm and 85mm. Discounts if you buy the complete set. Well it that way here in the `UK. I like your enthusiasm on your channel. Don't worry about what others say. Just ignore and keep up the good work.

This is why I shoot ze/zf/Contax zeiss glass. You get amazing contrast/colors/cinematic rendering, long focus throws with hard stops, and almost no focus breathing.

I’ve become particularly partial to the slower Contax primes since picking up the bmpcc4k. The 18mm f4, 25mm f 2.8, 28mm f2.8, 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, and 85mm 2.8 can all be swapped on a gimbal without rebalancing. They also render better in my opinion than the zf/ze coatings.

Since the bmpcc4k ‘s weight is off centered you have to rebalance all the axises when swapping lenses of different size, so these Contax lenses have been a god send.

I’ve got the 28 and 50 so far!
